The Temple Legal Aid Office provides free legal representation in civil law matters to qualifying, low-income, Philadelphia residents. The Temple Legal Aid Office houses two legal clinics, the Community Lawyering Clinic and the Family Justice Clinic. 

The Community Lawyering Clinic provides legal advice and representation to people with severe illnesses, like cancer and HIV, and people with severe disabilities.  The Community Lawyering Clinic frequently helps clients with issues related to:

  • Problems encountered with health insurance companies
  • Life-planning (wills, powers of attorney, etc.)
  • Employment discrimination
  • Public benefits as they relate to persons with chronic illness and physical disabilities

The Family Justice Clinic advocates in partnership and solidarity with families whose family stability or integrity has been impacted by state intervention.  FJC’s advocacy seeks to prevent and/or attempt to repair, the harms of family policing or other state intervention, while promoting racial justice and family preservation.  FJC provides individual legal advice and representation to families for:

  • Department of Human Services (DHS) investigations and safety plans
  • Child abuse registry appeals
  • Custody and Protection from Abuse cases with DHS, criminal justice and/or other system involvement (current or past)
  • Confirmation or reinstatement of parental rights (via adoption)
