Continuing a decade-long tradition of transatlantic partnership, Temple Law recently hosted over 35 Italian practitioners and students from the EFLIT (English for Law & International Transactions) program. The visit served as a premier example of “One Temple”, demonstrating how the law school’s domestic expertise and international presence in Rome work together to provide a world-class legal education.
The day’s programming bridged the gap between civil law foundations and common law practice. Professor Emeritus David Sonenshein delivered a comparative analysis of legal reasoning, providing the visitors with the conceptual tools necessary to navigate the U.S. legal system.
Catriona Davenport, Director of International Programs, addressed a critical skill set for global practitioners: the transition from civil law drafting to U.S.-style legal writing. Her remarks underscored Temple’s commitment to providing international students with the practical communication tools required by global legal employers.

Interim Dean Kristen Murray, Assistant Dean John Smagula, and Assistant Director Sabriya McWilliams presented a streamlined pathway that connects Temple’s Rome and Philadelphia campuses. By highlighting the success of alumni like Edoardo Corò (LLM ’20), who utilized the Rome Summer Program as a bridge to his Philadelphia LL.M. before joining Jones Day in Milan, they illustrated how Temple’s global footprint creates a seamless professional pathway.
“We greatly value our partnership with Professor Stefano Maffei and EFLIT,” said Dean Smagula. “By integrating our Rome Summer Program with our Philadelphia LL.M. curriculum, we offer Italian students a cohesive educational experience that is uniquely ‘Temple.’ Whether students are studying in Rome or Philadelphia, they are part of one unified community.”
Temple Law takes pride in its global platform, and visits like these show that when our campuses and faculty work as one, we create an environment where international students can truly thrive.
