Degrees and Certificate Programs

The Temple Law J.D.

At Temple, students can dive into tax in their first year of study – and nearly a third of them do just that, choosing Taxation as their 1L elective. Nearly three-quarters of the Class of 2019 took at least one tax course, and 25% took more than one before graduation. Students have plenty of options from which to choose: Temple’s robust tax curriculum includes writing and experiential opportunities, as well as Professor Alice Abreu’s groundbreaking Low Income Taxpayer Policy and Practice course.

LL.M. in Taxation

Each year, new and experienced lawyers choose Temple Law’s Graduate Tax Program to deepen their understanding of complex taxation issues. Since 1973, the internationally renowned Graduate Tax Program has offered a Master of Laws in Taxation that provides candidates with a strong foundation in tax law as well as an opportunity to develop expertise beyond the level of study offered in the J.D. program. In addition, Temple Law offers certificate programs in Estate Planning and in the Taxation of Employee Benefits. These certificate programs allow students to gain expertise in specific areas of interest without having to complete all of the LL.M. requirements.

Master of Science in Taxation

A partnership between Temple University’s Beasley School of Law and Fox School of Business, the Master of Science in Taxation (MST) program is an interdisciplinary educational experience for accounting and financial professionals. The program combines the Law School’s expertise in teaching tax law, cultivated over the 50-year history of the Graduate Tax Program, with the Fox School’s business and accounting acumen.

Employee Benefits Certificate Program

Temple’s Employee Benefits Certificate Program is designed for those who see the benefits of additional training but do not wish to pursue an LL.M. degree. The program exposes students to the sophisticated federal laws which govern the provision of employee benefits.

Estate Planning Certificate Program

Temple’s Estate Planning Certificate Program is designed for those who see the benefits of additional training but do not wish to pursue an LL.M. degree. The Estate Planning Program exposes students to sophisticated federal estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax issues, as well as the federal income taxation of trusts and estates. The Program benefits practitioners who want to concentrate on tax issues involved in estate planning and estate administration. In addition, it provides valuable training for relatively inexperienced practitioners who want to acquire an advanced level of expertise in this area.
