On October 5, Professor Jaya Ramji-Nogales, Co-Director of the Temple Institute for International Law and Public Policy, presented Lives in the Balance: Asylum Adjudication by the Department of Homeland Security at New York University School of Law. The event was co-sponsored by the Immigration and Nationality Committee of the New York City Bar Association and the NYU Law School Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.
Professor Ramji-Nogales joined Professors Philip G. Schrag and Andrew Schoenholtz, of Georgetown University Law Center, to discuss research presented in their 2014 book, Lives in the Balance: Asylum Adjudication by the Department of Homeland Security. Their research looks at changing patterns of asylum adjudication over time, officers’ perceptions of certain characteristics of applicants, differences among the eight regional offices, and outcomes to correlations between personal characteristics of the adjudicators.
