{"id":1128,"date":"2018-02-06T09:38:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T14:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/?p=1128"},"modified":"2018-02-06T09:38:47","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T14:38:47","slug":"women-conflict-kosovo-afghanistan-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/2018\/02\/06\/women-conflict-kosovo-afghanistan-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in Conflict: Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1129\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6942.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1129 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6942-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Margaret deGuzman (left) and Cornelius Nolen &#8217;95 (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On February 1, 2018, the Institute for International Law and Public Policy hosted a lecture by Cornelius Nolen \u201995, entitled \u201cWomen in Conflict: Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.\u201d \u00a0Mr. Nolen was joined in conversation by Temple Law Professor Margaret deGuzman, a leading expert in International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law.\u00a0 The talk detailed Mr. Nolen\u2019s time in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.\u00a0 Using specific cases and experiences, he explained how women in particular areas of conflict navigate social, political, and legal systems.\u00a0 At the conclusion of his lecture, Mr. Nolen answered questions from students and faculty members.\u00a0 He also provided insights to students seeking careers in different fields of international law.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Nolen currently serves as a legal monitor in Lughansk, Ukraine for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osce.org\">Organization for Security and Cooperation<\/a> in Europe, the world\u2019s largest security-oriented intergovernmental organization.\u00a0 In this capacity, he observes and works with growing legal systems, often dealing with human rights and gender-equality issues.\u00a0 Prior to his work in Ukraine, Mr. Nolen worked as a Senior Democratization Officer in Kosovo for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.\u00a0 While in Kosovo, he advised the Department of Human Rights and Communities on regional political and security issues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1130\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6915.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1130 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/iilpp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6915-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Jaya Ramji-Nogales introduces Professor Margaret deGuzman and Cornelius Nolen &#8217;95<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From 2010-12, Mr. Nolen worked to implement the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.undp.org\/content\/dam\/afghanistan\/docs\/Project-Summaries\/2014\/JHRA.pdf\">Justice and Human Rights in Afghanistan Project<\/a> with the United Nations Development Programme.\u00a0 While in Kabul, he helped develop sub-national programs to construct and rehabilitate judicial infrastructure.\u00a0 Prior to his time in Afghanistan, Mr. Nolen worked for the American Bar Association as the Country Director in Serbia. Before that, he spent eight years with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, advising on issues of international criminal law, women\u2019s rights, and humanitarian law.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Nolen graduated from Temple University James E.
