Noted scholar Dr. Daniel Morales-Armstrong will survey the history of slavery and abolition law in Puerto Rico, setting the context for an interview in which he and the Honorable Giovanni Campbell will look beyond the statistics to explore the stories and lived experiences of Puerto Rico’s communities and people. Dr. Morales-Armstrong and Judge Campbell (JD ’93) will take brief questions at the conclusion of their conversation.

About the Speakers
Dr. Daniel Morales-Armstrong
Dr. Daniel Morales-Armstrong is a historian and educator specializing in Puerto Rican slavery and emancipation. Dr. Morales-Armstrong earned his joint PhD in History and Africana Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 2024; he currently conducts research on the topic through his joint appointment at New York University and the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CUNY Hunter College).
Honorable Giovanni O. Campbell (JD '93)
Hon. Giovanni O. Campbell has served in the Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia, since January of 2014. Judge Campbell presides in the Criminal Section of the Trial Division, and is one of six judges assigned to hear homicide cases listed for trial in Philadelphia. Judge Campbell is also the Supervising Judge of the First Judicial District’s Indicting Grand Jury Program. Although Judge Campbell has presided primarily in the Criminal Section, he has also served in the Civil Section.

Honorable Nelson A. Díaz
The Honorable Nelson A. Díaz, is a distinguished lawyer, respected jurist, successful partner, exceptional public servant, Fortune 100 corporate director, activist, columnist and author. In 1972, he graduated from Temple University’s James Beasley School of Law and in 2021, he created the endowed Honorable Nelson A. Díaz Professorship in Law at Temple. Presently, he is a member of Temple University’s Board of Trustees, of Counsel at Dilworth Paxson and co-founder of a national nonprofit, Hispanics in Energy.
Mr. Díaz is a trailblazer who broke many barriers. He was the first Latino attorney to pass the Pennsylvania bar, the first Latino Judge in the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the first person of color to be selected Administrative Judge in the Court of Common Pleas, the first Puerto Rican White House Fellow serving Vice President Walter Mondale, the first Puerto Rican Japan Society Fellow, and the first minority General Counsel at United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He is a proud co-founder of Black American Law Student Association (BALSA) at Temple University School of Law and co-founder of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania. Judge Díaz served on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Criminal Procedure Rules Committee and the Committee on Racial and Gender Bias.
