{"id":825,"date":"2016-10-10T13:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T17:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/ejc\/?p=825"},"modified":"2021-11-23T19:09:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T19:09:14","slug":"affordable-housing-racial-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/2016\/10\/10\/affordable-housing-racial-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Affordable housing and racial justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The redevelopment of Philadelphia neighborhoods is putting pressure on the city\u2019s supply of public housing \u2013 and on Philadelphia\u2019s poorest residents, who are disproportionately persons of color.\u00a0 What can be done to ensure that their housing needs are fairly addressed?<\/p>\n<p>With this problem in mind, Justice Lab students are continuing to work this fall with their client, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clsphila.org\">Community Legal Services<\/a>\u2019 Housing Unit. \u00a0While an advanced student continues to work on advocacy related to HUD\u2019s new Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program (see our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/07\/Philadelphia-Rental-Assistance-Demonstration-Program-Advocacy-Guide.pdf\">Philadelphia Rental Assistance Demonstration Program Advocacy Guide<\/a>,\u00a0issued last spring),\u00a0other Justice Lab students are helping CLS develop a long-term strategy to address racial justice in affordable housing in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>Students are collecting and analyzing data about public housing properties, Section 8 contracts, demographics, income levels, gentrification trends, and other factors to identify ways to preserve affordable housing. \u00a0This innovative work will allow the students and CLS to develop proactive strategies to preserve equitable, affordable housing in Philadelphia, before tenants are at risk of losing their homes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The redevelopment of Philadelphia neighborhoods is putting pressure on the city\u2019s supply of public housing \u2013 and on Philadelphia\u2019s poorest residents, who are disproportionately persons of color.\u00a0 What can be done to ensure that their housing needs are fairly addressed?
