{"id":711,"date":"2016-06-17T09:50:54","date_gmt":"2016-06-17T13:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/ejc\/?p=711"},"modified":"2021-11-23T19:09:15","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T19:09:15","slug":"dramatizing-immigration-services-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/2016\/06\/17\/dramatizing-immigration-services-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatizing immigration-services fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI can help you qualify for a Green Card under the 10 year law!\u00a0 \u2026 Look at all the people I work with [gesturing to the long line in the waiting room] &#8212; it\u2019s because I know what I am doing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those are lines from one of the skits developed by students in the Center\u2019s Social Justice Lawyering Clinic &#8212; Michael Ahlert, Melissa Castillo, and Anika Forrest \u2013 who were looking for a way to educate immigrant communities about the widespread problem of legal services fraud. The students worked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsfw.org\/\">Friends of Farmworkers<\/a>, a Philly non-profit that has developed a special project\u00a0on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsfw.org\/service-areas\/special-initiatives\/notario-fraud\/\">Stopping Notario Fraud and the Unauthorized Practice of Law<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to do community outreach in some way that was engaging and different from the traditional lecture or PowerPoint,\u201d Anika stated. And they did: the skits (in <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/06\/Skits-on-immigration-services-fraud-English.pdf\">English<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/06\/Skits-on-immigration-services-fraud-Spanish.pdf\">Spanish<\/a>)\u00a0are entertaining but also make serious points \u2013 only attorneys can give legal advice, don\u2019t sign blank forms, ask for translation when you need it, and beware of promises that are too good to be true.
