{"id":497,"date":"2016-01-14T13:37:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T18:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/ejc\/?p=497"},"modified":"2021-11-23T19:10:05","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T19:10:05","slug":"497-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/2016\/01\/14\/497-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax clinic at the Sheller Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As February approaches, plans are again underway\u00a0for the Center\u2019s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clinic. \u00a0Managed by <a href=\"http:\/\/ceibaphiladelphia.org\/\">Ceiba<\/a>, a community organization, the clinic runs from February to mid-April, and is staffed in part by\u00a0Temple Law student volunteers trained by Professor Alice Abreu (a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/ejc\/who-we-are\/\">Affiliated Faculty<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the clinic prepared 187 returns, resulting in approximately $219,535 in state and federal refunds to local families.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic also offers a terrific experience for law students.\u00a0 Rachel Sellers, a second-year student, said this: \u00a0&#8220;VITA is an incredible opportunity to experience the tensions between tax policy and the consequences to real taxpayers. I genuinely looked forward to my Mondays at VITA as I met inspiring people and helped them to navigate the tax process.
