The photo shows John at the press conference at which the Urgent Appeal to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention was announced.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We, Mariya Tsalkovich, Anthoy Sierzega, and John Farrell, worked to\u00a0challenge the U.S. government\u2019s\u00a0detention\u00a0of families\u00a0at Berks Family Detention Center in Pennsylvania, through the Sheller Center Social Justice Lawyering Clinic. Closely in conjunction with Juntos, a community-based\u00a0immigrant advocacy organization, we\u00a0helped to advocate for closure of Berks by arguing that\u00a0these practices violate state, federal, and international law. Berks has been keeping children and families who seek asylum within the United States in prison-like conditions\u00a0for potentially indefinite periods, violating\u00a0their\u00a0due process rights.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of our semester,\u00a0we filed an\u00a0Urgent\u00a0Appeal with the United Nations Working <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1050\" src=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/02\/Press-Conference-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/02\/Press-Conference-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/ejc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/02\/Press-Conference.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Group on Arbitrary Detention,\u00a0co-wrote an Amicus Brief on behalf of psychological providers in the state litigation related to the licensing of the facility, and created educational materials to bring these practices to light. It was an honor to be a part of these efforts, working closely with seasoned practitioners and community members alike.
