{"id":2334,"date":"2020-10-19T18:01:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T22:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/?p=2334"},"modified":"2021-11-23T19:06:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T19:06:17","slug":"this-fall-in-the-access-to-justice-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/2020\/10\/19\/this-fall-in-the-access-to-justice-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"This fall in the Access to Justice Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students in the Center&#8217;s Access to Justice Clinic, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/publication\/expanding-philadelphians-access-to-justice-temple-laws-access-to-justice-clinic-philadelphia-bar-reporter-october-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">profiled<\/a> in this month&#8217;s Philadelphia Bar Reporter, work on projects aimed at creating better systems for helping people who are unrepresented in civil matters. This fall, students are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Studying Philadelphia&#8217;s small claims court, where mostly-unrepresented people are sued &#8212; typically by large debt-buying companies &#8212; over credit-card and other debts. The difficult experience of unrepresented defendants in consumer-debt courts, and ideas for ways of leveling the playing field, are the subject of a recent national study by the Pew Charitable Trusts, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/reports\/2020\/05\/how-debt-collectors-are-transforming-the-business-of-state-courts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Debt Collectors are Transforming the Business of State Courts.<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>Exploring the experience of parties to child custody proceedings in Family Court, where hearings are now held virtually rather than in-person. On-line proceedings can pose hardships for unrepresented people, especially when internet access is limited and private space hard to find.<\/li>\n<li>Looking into the possibility of creating a legal &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=662&amp;action=edit&amp;classic-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incubator<\/a>&#8221; that could help law graduates set up affordable practices serving small businesses in Philly. Currently, the city&#8217;s smallest enterprises have difficulty getting help with taxes, contracts, compliance, and other matters, and the pandemic has exacerbated the need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We&#8217;re also continuing to work on promoting the recommendations contained in our two\u00a0 reports from last summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/07\/Reducing-Default-Judgments-in-Philadelphias-Landlord-Tenant-Court-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reducing Default Judgments in Philadelphia&#8217;s Landlord-Tenant Court<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/07\/A-Powerful-Resource-in-Plain-Sight-How-the-Free-Library-Can-Promote-Access-to-Justice.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Powerful Resource in Plain Sight &#8211; How the Free Library Can Promote Access to Justice<\/a>.
