The Sheriff has the responsibility to provide safety and security for courthouses. This agreement also requires that ICE agents identify themselves upon entering the courthouse, declare whether they are armed, and state where in the building they intend to go. The Sheriff\u2019s Deputies will alert their supervisors, who will contact the presiding judge.<\/p>\n<p>The new policy is consistent with some of the recommendations in the Sheller Center\u2019s Report, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/csj\/publication\/obstructing-justice-the-chilling-effect-of-ices-arrests-of-immigrants-at-pennsylvanias-courthouses\/\">Obstructing Justice<\/a><\/u>. In the report, law students amassed information about the devastating impact that ICE arrests are having on immigrant communities, making victims, witnesses, and defendants fearful to access the courts. Since the report was released, there have been several <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.philly.com\/news\/ice-immigration-courthouse-arrests-undocumented-20190331.html\">local<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/articles\/1133777\">national<\/a><\/u> stories about the continued impact of ICE arrests on such communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Sheriff has reached an agreement with ICE to stop arrests of immigrants in courthouses in Philadelphia.
