Temple Law School\u2019s Center for Compliance and Ethics has announced plans to expand its programs to Asia. On November 7, 2019, the Center and the Temple Law Program in Japan held the inaugural meeting of the Center\u2019s Asia Advisory Committee in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Asia Advisory Committee is composed of compliance and ethics leaders from various sectors, including Astellas Pharma, Ernst and Young, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, FTI Consulting, Morgan Stanley, Olympus, Otsuka Pharmaceutical, Ropes & Gray, Sojitz, Tokio Marine Holdings, and Yahama Music. The Committee is co- chaired by Jon Smollen, Practice Professor of Law and Executive Director, Center for Compliance and Ethics and Tina Saunders, Director of the Law Programs for Temple University Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince its launch, the Center for Compliance and Ethics has made great strides to improve the understanding and practice of compliance and ethics through educational programs, public-private sector dialogues and academic research and thought leadership,\u201d said Smollen. \u201cAs a leader in global education with exceptional law programs in Tokyo, Beijing, and Rome, Temple is well-positioned to bring our compliance and ethics programs to the global stage. The Center aims to be a focal point for students, professionals, regulators, and business leaders in the rapidly evolving field of compliance and ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2020, the Center will launch Temple Law\u2019s Certificate for International Business and Compliance for foreign lawyers and non-lawyers. This certificate program, which builds upon the Center\u2019s comprehensive compliance and ethics curriculum, is designed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing number of compliance and ethics professionals outside of the U.S. The Committee is also planning to hold a private-public sector roundtable at Temple University Japan\u2019s campus in 2020. Such roundtables are key to the Center\u2019s goal of facilitating dialogues between compliance and ethics leaders, regulators, and academics that advance sustainable approaches to compliance and ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Committee appointed Alexander Dmitrenko, Head of Asia Sanctions, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as the Chair of its Japan Sub-committee, which will take a leadership role in launching programs through Temple University Japan. \u201cCompliance and ethics has gradually become an integral part of business operations for Asian companies, creating a high demand for often-lacking expertise in this fast-evolving regulatory area,\u201d Mr. Dmitrenko said. \u201cThe Japan Sub-committee, composed of experienced professionals from key industries, will assist Temple University in identifying and providing educational opportunities to prepare the next generation of compliance and ethics leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Asia Advisory Committee meeting occurred during Compliance Week and celebratory events in honor of the 25th Anniversary of Temple Law\u2019s Program in Japan as well as the new Temple University Japan campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
