Stereotype threat effects on Black and White athletic performance. <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 77, <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">1213-1227.\u00a0 But what does miniature golf have to do with law students studying advocacy or doctrinal subjects such as Evidence?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Look out at a law school advocacy classroom and (hopefully) you will be confronted with a sea of faces from diverse backgrounds.\u00a0 A natural reaction might be that since they all were accepted at law school, made it through first year, and now are 2Ls, they are all equally comfortable at the performance tasks we will be giving them.\u00a0 Perhaps we need to think again.\u00a0 Certainly we need to proceed with care and affirmation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Valerie Harrison and Kathryn Peach D\u2019Angelo, in their exceptional book DO RIGHT BY ME: LEARNING TO RAISE BLACK CHILDREN IN WHITE SPACES, explain that \u201cBlack students in a predominantly white school may feel pressure that white students do not experience to dispel the stereotype of intellectual inferiority.\u00a0 The extra pressure to succeed can\u2026deplete the student\u2019s memory[] or require energy to suppress negative thoughts, which means that less of the student\u2019s energy and effort can be focused on the task.\u201d\u00a0 Id. at 103-104.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The label for this phenomenon, studied for a quarter-century, is \u201cstereotype threat.\u201d\u00a0 It has been defined alternately as<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When people are aware of a negative stereotype about their group, they often worry that their performance on a particular task might end up confirming other people\u2019s beliefs about their group. Psychologists use the term <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stereotype threat<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to refer to this state in which people are worried about confirming a group stereotype.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-is-stereotype-threat-4586395\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-is-stereotype-threat-4586395<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[N]egative stereotypes raise inhibiting doubts and high-pressure anxieties in a test-taker&#8217;s mind, resulting in the phenomenon of &#8220;stereotype threat.&#8221; Psychologists Claude Steele, PhD, Joshua Aronson, PhD, and Steven Spencer, PhD, have found that even passing reminders that someone belongs to one group or another, such as a group stereotyped as inferior in academics, can wreak havoc with test performance.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/stereotype\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/stereotype<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research studies have shown the following:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When students were asked to note their race on a questionnaire prior to taking a vocabulary test, Black students scored lower than White students and lower than Black students who were not asked about their race.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-is-stereotype-threat-4586395\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-is-stereotype-threat-4586395<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When women were given a math test, some were told that men and women had performed equally well on this type of challenge and others were told that men and women scored differently.\u00a0 Those who received the latter type of information scored lower than those told that men and women did equally well.\u00a0 All were \u201ctop performers\u201d in math.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/stereotype\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/stereotype<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These are exemplary of numerous studies confirming the phenomenon of stereotype threat.\u00a0 They leave two questions.\u00a0 How can such threats be mitigated or removed; and is there anything in how we teach advocacy skills that might engender such threats?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Without studies in the law school (and skills course) contexts there aren\u2019t specific proven preventive or ameliorative steps.\u00a0 But drawing from the numerous studies in other educational setting, some possibilities emerge.\u00a0 These include:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a diverse faculty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Encouraging self-affirming reflections before or at the beginning of a semester.
