{"id":572,"date":"2015-07-30T09:10:27","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T13:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/10q\/?p=572"},"modified":"2015-07-30T09:10:27","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T13:10:27","slug":"temple-law-hosts-first-mini-mba-cle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/temple-law-hosts-first-mini-mba-cle\/","title":{"rendered":"Temple Law Hosts First Mini-MBA CLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, a dozen lawyers of varying degrees of experience from a variety of practice settings attended Temple\u2019s first Mini-MBA for Law Professionals, a ten-course program worth 18 PA CLE credits, designed and taught by faculty from Temple\u2019s Beasley School of Law and the Fox School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>The accelerated weekend program was designed to equip working attorneys and recent law school graduates with the business acumen that&#8217;s most relevant and necessary to today&#8217;s legal environment, without disrupting their busy practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Mini-MBA is an exceptional addition to Fox&#8217;s executive education programs,&#8221; said Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., Professor and Chair of the Fox School&#8217;s Legal Studies department. &#8220;This program is unique because it is a joint enterprise between the Beasley School and the Fox School, with top faculty from both teaching the courses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Faculty from the Beasley School of Law and Fox School&#8217;s Legal Studies, Finance, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, and Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management departments taught courses that included<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accounting for Lawyers<\/li>\n<li>Financial Management<\/li>\n<li>Marketing Management<\/li>\n<li>Legal Issues in the Workplace<\/li>\n<li>Drafting of Business Agreements<\/li>\n<li>Industrial Organization and Corporate Strategy<\/li>\n<li>Managing Risk<\/li>\n<li>Corporate Compliance<\/li>\n<li>Cybersecurity<\/li>\n<li>Negotiations and Drafting of Business Agreements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each day of the program began with a breakfast leadership session. Friday, Fran Dunphy\u2014Temple University men&#8217;s basketball coach, Fox School adjunct professor, and Fox MBA\u2014kicked off the program with a discussion about effective business leadership. President of SMR Legal Search, Susan Rubinovitz, explored marketing strategies for lawyers during Saturday&#8217;s session. On Sunday, Albert S. Dandridge III, (LAW\u00a0\u201978), chair of Schnader law firm\u2019s Securities Practice Group and its Chief Diversity Officer, related leadership lessons he learned while serving in the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n<p>Why create a mini-MBA for lawyers? Duncan B. Hollis, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Beasley School, explained that, &#8220;the relationship between law and business is becoming more intertwined every year.&#8221; He added, \u201cWe believe in equipping lawyers with the tools necessary for practicing in all contexts, and not just in traditional litigation settings. The Mini-MBA offers lawyers the introduction they need to attain basic business skills, which can serve as a scaffolding upon which to build up real expertise in business law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both newer lawyers and long-time practitioners found value in the program. \u201cEven after over forty years of practice, I learned new and interesting things,\u201d said Allan Fellheimer, of Fellheimer and Eichen, speaking of the Negotiation and Drafting of Business Documents class taught by Dean Emeritus Robert Reinstein and Professor Jonathan Lipson.<\/p>\n<p>With the success of this program, the Beasley School and the Fox School plan to offer the program twice a year, once in the fall and the spring. Tuition for the Mini-MBA program is $2,500, which includes materials and meals. Beasley School of Law alumni are eligible for a $500 tuition discount.
