In this time of volatility and ambiguous ethical standards, compliance leaders have a unique opportunity both to shield their organizations from risk and help propel them forward.\u00a0 Here are three essential actions that we can take today to strengthen our compliance programs while driving business success.<\/p>\n

  1. Bring stability <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We live in an era of rapid-fire government actions and policy pronouncements.\u00a0 Uncertainty abounds.\u00a0 Business leaders may feel compelled to speculate about business impacts.\u00a0 But reacting to this impulse is seldom an efficient use of their time.\u00a0 As compliance leaders, our expertise lies in assessing risk, anticipating change, and providing informed perspective.\u00a0 This ability to filter noise and convey what really matters is a unique and essential skill.<\/p>\n

    Take a proactive role in reviewing legal and policy developments. Use your internal networks to ensure that stakeholders remain focused on addressing the business implications.\u00a0 This approach not only mitigates risk but also fosters stability \u2013 enabling business leaders to concentrate on executing strategy instead of reacting to today\u2019s headline.<\/p>\n

    1. Protect your ethical standards <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Public figures — whether celebrities, influencers, or leaders — play a significant role in shaping societal values. Studies<\/a> show<\/a> that they have a unique and powerful influence over people’s behaviors and ethical perspectives. \u00a0The erosion of ethical standards and long-held societal norms is a risk to an organization\u2019s ethical culture and business success.\u00a0 Employees may be more prone to cut corners and rationalize questionable conduct, particularly in a challenging business environment where there is pressure to meet performance targets.<\/p>\n

      When there is inevitable fallout from this behavior, it will take a long time for the business to recover.\u00a0 A recent study by Boston Consulting Group<\/a> analyzed 177 large companies over a three-year period and found that nearly 30% experienced a trust-destroying event that resulted in severe financial and reputational damage.\u00a0 Those that experienced a company-level scandal like fraud or bribery, or a failure of processes or controls like a data or safety breach, had the lowest recovery rates.<\/p>\n

      Compliance leadership is essential.\u00a0 Use your tools \u2013 storytelling, senior leader examples, messaging, targeted education sessions \u2013 to make clear that your organization\u2019s values and standards have not changed.\u00a0\u00a0 Validate that processes and key controls are in place.\u00a0 These actions (or a lack of action) will determine which organizations maintain the trust of clients, regulators, and employees for today and in the long term.<\/p>\n

      1. Strengthen your seat at the table<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        A hallmark of an effective compliance program is influence \u2013 the ability to inform decisions, shape strategy, and protect the organization in real time.\u00a0 Holding a Chief Compliance Officer title alone is not enough.\u00a0 If business leaders view compliance as a reactive function that does not understand commercial realities, your ability to influence is compromised.<\/p>\n
