Sometimes that experience is great. Sometimes it is not. Most times, it\u2019s a little of both, and always, it is memorable. Similarly, no one law professor is like another, but you\u2019ll remember them all, for the good, the bad, or the both, long after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Since its founding in 1895, Temple Law has had many outstanding professors in residence. As an alumnus \u2013 or current student &#8211; you likely have your favorites and least favorites. But whether they were stern, Socratic, quirky, brilliant, or all of these things, they all made an impression&#8211;on the faculty, on the legal profession, and, especially, on their students.<\/p>\n<p>This article is about one of those professors \u2014 Someone who \u201cmay have had more impact on the law than anyone who ever taught here,\u201d according to Temple\u2019s former Dean, Robert Reinstein.<\/p>\n<p>Who was he?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn <em>uncommon<\/em> man&#8230;\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Arline Lotman, LAW 77\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA <em>stalwart <\/em>of the faculty&#8230;\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Lawrence Reilly, Senior Reference Librarian (1974 &#8211; Present)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly an <em>authority<\/em> on his subject&#8230;\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Marc Furman, LAW 77\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Tall.<\/em>\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Professor James Strazzella, (1973 \u2013 Present)<\/p>\n<p>His name was Fairfax Leary Jr. He taught at Temple from 1968 through 1977, after a long, illustrious career in practice, astonishing for its range of accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>Among his major achievements in the legal world: being one of the advisors to Karl Llewellyn and a drafter of various provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code, Army Colonel during World War II, Partner at Saul Ewing, Counsel for Ralph Nader, and a law professor at three Philadelphia-area institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Born to an old Virginia family in Washington D.C. in 1910, Leary was, in every sense, pedigreed for success. The son of a distinguished Admiral (with his own <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_F._Leary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/a> page) \u201cFax\u201d as he was known to close friends and family, grew up in DC, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton, and later served as editor of the Harvard Law Journal.<\/p>\n<p>He came to Philadelphia in 1946 after serving as a Lt. Colonel in the army in World War II. From 1946 until he joined Temple\u2019s faculty he was, well, extraordinarily productive.<\/p>\n<p>During this time he served as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Associate Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School teaching corporate law.<\/li>\n<li>First general counsel for the General State Authority in Harrisburg, specializing in bond counsel for schools and other public projects.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Partner at Schnader Harrison Segal &amp; Lewis practicing corporate and insurance law.<\/li>\n<li>General State Authority (again), this time as head of its legal staff.<\/li>\n<li>Partner at Saul, Ewing, Remick &amp; Saul.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At some point, he also found time to draft the Uniform Commercial Code, which was adopted first in Pennsylvania-<\/p>\n<p>And, from his resume, to do all of this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-277\" src=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw-1024x768.png\" alt=\"Fairfax Leary Resume\" width=\"940\" height=\"705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/Leary_Resume_bw.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Leary wasn\u2019t all business; According to his CV he also maintained a fine stamp collection.<\/p>\n<p>Suffice to say that by the time he joined the Temple Law staff in the 1968\/69 academic year, he had made significant contributions to the legal system. Even in that day, Temple was known for its practical law training, and in this, Leary excelled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-278 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease.png\" alt=\"Fairfax Leary News Release\" width=\"1698\" height=\"2216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease.png 1698w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease-230x300.png 230w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease-785x1024.png 785w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease-768x1002.png 768w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease-1177x1536.png 1177w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary_NewsRelease-1569x2048.png 1569w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1698px) 100vw, 1698px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was highly respected in the commercial law field, at the time when there were not a lot of people teaching it. There were a lot of good practitioners, but not a lot of full-time professors,\u201d said Professor James Strazzella, who joined the Temple Law staff shortly after Leary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis Patrician background was unusual for Temple faculty, and he was very famous among the legal community. As a result, students had very high expectations.\u201d Said Reinstein, \u201cAs a colleague he was gregarious and friendly, but I know that as a professor he was trained in the old Socratic style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what I knew he was a very formal professor, and he expected a lot from his students,\u201d said Strazzella.<\/p>\n<p>Comments as to his teaching style vary, though all of his former students who shared their memories had positive things to say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the professor in the popular movie of the time, \u2018The Paper Chase,\u2019 he was demanding, but unlike that movie professor, he was not mean or cruel. I do remember one particular point he made:\u00a0Leary admonished students who said there was a \u2018policy\u2019 reason for the court\u2019s decision.\u00a0 A more precise answer was required, that is, a policy <em>for<\/em> or <em>against <\/em>a particular goal.\u201d Henry Maurer, LAW 80\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always respectful of his students and clearly an authority on his subject matter.\u00a0As a result, I enjoyed his class and was amazed that as a law student, we had professors of this experience and quality.\u201d Marc Furman, LAW 77\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-280\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-280 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary-300x300.png\" alt=\"Fairfax Leary\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/10q\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/FairfaxLeary.png 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fairfax Leary, Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou could tell he was proud of himself, as to his background and achievements, but I think he really enjoyed teaching the Temple students who were certainly more \u2018working class\u2019 than he was accustomed to.\u201d Arline Lotman, LAW 77\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t remember much about his class but I do remember he invited all of us to a party at his beautiful house on the Main Line, which was a little intimidating for some of us.\u201d Marilyn May, LAW 79\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of his status as a \u2018Philadelphia Brahmin\u2019, Professor Reinstein also recalled having dinner at the Leary residence in Villanova one night. Fax gave him the grand tour, which included a viewing of the dress his great-great-great-grandmother had worn when she danced with George Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe his family dates back to the Mayflower,\u201d said Reinstein.<\/p>\n<p>Given this blue-blooded background, it is noteworthy that while at Temple, Prof. Leary took a year (1971-1972) to serve as the first general counsel to the Public Interest Research Group, an organization created by the consumer-advocate (and later presidential spoiler) Ralph Nader after his 1971 Action for Change: A Student Manual. In 1977, Leary was forced to retire from Temple\u2019s faculty having hit the (then mandatory) retirement age. Not content to become a full-time stamp collector, he went on to join the faculty at Widener University School of Law and remained there until he officially retired in 1987. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/05\/21\/obituaries\/fairfax-leary-lawyer-and-law-professor-80.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He died in 1990.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite his relatively short time at Temple, Leary\u2019s fascinating legacy lives on. The UCC, which he helped to craft and to enact, continues to influence practice; his scholarship continues to be cited.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[2]<\/a> And most of all, he lives on in minds of his former students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could use more Fairfax Learys.\u201d Arline Lotman, LAW 77\u2019<\/p>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"439.3298694399996\">\u201cHe was the kind of person you&#8217;re always glad to have known.&#8221; Carl M. Since the state could not legally take advantage of federal grant and loan offers from the Public Works Administration, the Authority was given the responsibility of negotiating for the funds needed to expand and modernize state facilities. It has since been merged into the <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.portal.state.pa.us\/portal\/server.pt\/community\/department_of_general_services\/1230\">Pennsylvania Department of General Services.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[2]<\/a> Perhaps with the exception of <em>Horse and Buggy Lien Law and Migratory Automobiles<\/em>, 96 U.
